Physicals Q & A

What are physicals?

A physical exam is a routine doctor’s appointment that assesses your physical and mental health. It presents a chance to ask your provider questions, discuss any unusual symptoms you’re experiencing, and update immunizations as necessary.

It’s important to undergo regular physicals even if you feel relatively healthy. Many chronic conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes, present few symptoms. Catching them early can prevent them from getting worse and causing more serious health problems.

How do I prepare for a physical exam?

Before your physical at Weingrow Wellness & Medical Center, make sure to gather the necessary paperwork, including:

  • A list of medications, supplements, or vitamins you take
  • Your medical and surgical history
  • Contact information for other doctors or specialists you’ve seen recently
  • Questions you’d like answered

If you have an implanted device, like a pacemaker or defibrillator, bring your device card as well.

What do physicals involve?

At Weingrow Wellness & Medical Center, physicals involve a multi-step process:

Step one

At the beginning of your appointment, a nurse takes your temperature, weight, and measures you. Then, they ask a series of questions, including if you drink or smoke, how often you exercise, and if you’re experiencing any unusual symptoms. After gathering this information, your primary care physician takes over.

Step two

First, your provider examines your skin for any unusual marks or growths. Next, you lie down on an exam table and they gently press on your abdomen, feeling your organs to assess their size, shape, and position.

Step three

After you sit back up, your provider uses a stethoscope to listen to your heart and lungs. If they notice any unusual sounds, they can order additional testing like an electrocardiogram or spirometry.

Step four

Your provider tests your reflexes and uses a bright light to assess your ears, eyes, nose, and throat. If you’re experiencing any unusual symptoms or have concerns, make sure to speak up and let your provider know.

Step five

Following a comprehensive exam, your provider orders laboratory tests, including a complete blood count (CBC), lipid panel, and urinalysis. They update your immunizations, if necessary, and can also refill any prescription medication that you take.

How often do I need a physical?

The team at Weingrow Wellness & Medical Center recommends scheduling a physical at least once a year. That’s especially true if you’re over the age of 50, as you’re more susceptible to potentially serious health problems like heart disease, certain types of cancer, and arthritis.
